Quick shell

A real Linux terminal, one click away

Press start and a small Linux system boots on an emulated x86 PC inside this tab. You get a root shell with the usual tools: ls, cd, cat, grep, find, vi, tar, ps and a few hundred more.

What it is

Not a simulation and not a remote server: the processor, memory and disk are emulated by WebAssembly on your own computer. Nothing you type leaves the page, and everything is wiped when you reload.

What you can do with it

  • Try a command you read about without touching your own machine.
  • Practise the shell, pipes and scripts — or follow the free 100-lesson Linux course.
  • Break things on purpose: a reboot gives you a clean system again.

Limits

It is a small BusyBox-based Linux, so some GNU options are missing. Networking goes through the browser and only plain HTTP works. For a full desktop, boot one of the systems in the OS museum.
